Beyond Traditional Automation: Why Conventional Pick-and- Place Systems Cannot Solve Flexible Circuit Assembly

Despite the automation that has transformed rigid board production, flexible PCB manufacturing remains surprisingly manual. And it’s not due to lack of effort. It merely reflects fundamental limitations in conventional pick-and-place systems. Traditional automation fails flexible circuits across five critical dimensions: rigid-board design assumptions that damage delicate substrates; a single-arm architecture that’s incapable of two-handed manipulation; changeover economics that destroy high-mix production viability; two-dimensional vision systems that miss critical quality information; and precision constraints that are inadequate for modern component requirements.

These aren’t incremental shortfalls that can be solved by simply improving conventional approaches. They’re architectural limitations that require purpose-built solutions. Understanding this gap is essential for realistic automation evaluation.
